During my last few days of living in Japan I distinctly remember being irritated in the morning by the sound of men hocking loonies on their way to work. In 1980, when I went to Japan for the first time, such differences as men peeing in public (less common these days) were, believe it or not, rather enduring to me. But by 1997 they had become an irritant.
